LLI Design were invited to completely redesign this period apartment in a grand mansion block in the heart of Bloomsbury, Central London. This apartment hadn’t been renovated in many years so was in effect a blank canvas to create a beautiful pied a terre.
The brief was to keep and enhance the period details of the apartment, incorporating the clients’ inherited furniture pieces and combining them with new contemporary pieces to create an eclectic mix.
It was essential that the apartment kept its character and atmosphere. By taking an holistic and sensitive approach we were able to create a warm, inviting and practical base for the clients whilst staying true to the apartment’s character.
We knocked the two reception rooms together to create a generous library and dining room.
A music room was created from another reception room with bold bright colour and pattern choices as a counterpoint to the baby grand piano at its centrepiece.
A fresh bold and invigorating colour palette was selected for the bespoke joinery kitchen using lilac, palest dove grey, and gold with bleached out wooden detailing. Every centimetre of space that was available was used. The original fireplace opening in the chimney breast was repurposed into a larder unit, whilst a tall lacquered unit disguised a small but very practical utility cupboard. The washer / dryer was placed at high level with a pull out drawer below for laundry and shelves above for linen storage.
As is common with all apartments there was little provision for storage, but we managed to create a coats cupboard by nibbling a small amount out of the generous library room adjacent to the hall keeping the clean architectural lines of the corridor.
A soft romantic feel was selected for the master bedroom with a palette of bruised pinks, greys and taupes. The french styled bed was in a natural coloured linen with a bleached wooden frame, complemented with elegant bleached bedside tables with staggered height vintage globe pendant lights above. A large distressed chandelier was sited above the bed.
By way of reconfiguration, clever use of colour and lighting together with bespoke joinery elements throughout, this property was completely transformed from a dark tired apartment into a light filled pied a terre.
