LLI Design was recently commissioned to design a children’s bedroom for two boys in an apartment in Notting Hill, London. The brief was to design and enhance the bedroom, provide as much storage as possible and to create a feeling of space. It was important that the design would have longevity and would work as the children grew older. The room was of an average size, approximately 3.5 x 3.5 m but needed to pack a lot into it without it feeling cramped. The key to the success of the interior design was being creative with storage.

For the bed head, a bespoke joinery unit was designed, which integrated a huge amount of storage, with high-level cupboards above each bed and a hidden storage area directly behind the headboard.

Instead of having two separate bedside tables that would take up a lot of floor space, a bespoke central cantilevered bedside table was designed; to be shared by both beds. The bedside table featured a wall-mounted bedside light above and was underlit with a linear LED light. By cantilevering the bedside table the flooring below was still visible, which created a perception of the area being more spacious than it otherwise would feel.

The two existing single beds were replaced with two small double beds, these were designed as storage beds that lifted up, allowing the bed base to be used for storage.

A colour palette of blues, taupes and greys was specified as they are calm, easy colours; that would still work as the boys grew older.

As with any relatively tight interior space, it was important to ensure there was adequate circulation space to move around the room freely. To achieve this a detailed study of the room and furniture layout was carried out to identify and resolve any “pinch points”.

A bespoke built-in wardrobe with sliding doors was designed. The sliding doors were specified instead of hinged doors to save space when opening the wardrobe.

Opposite the beds, a bespoke lacquered shelving unit with underlit shelves, and cupboards was designed. This sizable unit was perfect for storing and displaying a large amount of the boy’s books and toys.

Lighting was key to enhancing the feeling of space within the room as well as creating a calm and cosseting atmosphere. Lighting is a particularly powerful tool when creating an ambience and when used correctly it can help give the illusion that the room is bigger than it actually is. This project was a creative challenge but demonstrates how much storage can be achieved in an average-sized London bedroom while creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
